Hey Hojo I love your mixes. I wanted to ask, do you use any effects while mixing? I tried using ableton to just combine songs but it sounds kind of lame and I will repitch a song and it sounds flat. Is there a go-to default effect when youre making a mix, and is it different when making a slowed down mix rather than a normal one?

On the newest slowmix I used a generic wet reverb over the entire thing to mask the slight clipping (and give it a ghostly vibe) when I’d stretch things out. The program I use (Mixmeister) has a thing where it locks the pitch and tempo, so rather than playing with the pitch I’m playing with the speed until I get the sound I like

Sometimes the song might be flat but as long as it sounds fine in transition I’m cool with that

If I can’t get it right enough in MM I do my edits in Audition, again paying attention to what bpm the song is ending up in so I can mix it into other songs easily

when I do normal stuff I do some equalizing after the mp3’s all done but not much.

Goddamn You Fake Japanese Girls: BenZel, Mioriyuri And Buying Into Stupid Narratives

It was a story that seemed too good to be true: late last year, Jessie Ware released a song called “If You Love Me” in cahoots with a new outfit called BenZel. Supposedly, BenZel were a pair of teenage Japanese girls from Osaka living in New York, who originally met over a message board thanks to a shared love of J. Dilla. They were doing some foreign exchange program. And here they were, making music for buzzed-about singer Jessie Ware.

It was, predictably, bogus: BenZel’s identity hasn’t been officially made clear but they aren’t Japanese. It is most likely a project of British outfit Two Inch Punch based off Instagram accounts and this post. Though it was ridiculous from the get go - as someone who teaches 15-year-old Japanese girls, this seemed ridiculous way before photos (no longer online hmmmmm) of BenZel live came out, which pretty much sealed the deal unless these girls were hitting the gym everyday.

Here’s the thing though - nobody called BenZel out on this when they first plopped down. A few publications added adjectives expressing some doubt (thanks SPIN), but most lapped up what I presume to be press-release bluster: teeny-tiny blogs all the way up to Pitchfork called BenZel “Japanese producers” and didn’t blink at that. A lot of people wrote about “If You Love Me” and BenZel’s subsequent music, but very few even raised an eyebrow at this situation. Only the above blog seemed to know BenZel was actually Two Inch Punch.
